STUDENT VISA (subclass 500)

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to stay in Australia to study a full-time course at an approved educational institution.

Eligibility:

      • Enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course (Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s, etc.).

      • Have a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE).

      • Meet Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirements.

      • Have sufficient funds to cover tuition, living costs, and travel.

      • Meet English language requirements (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL unless exempt).

      • Hold Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

  

Visa Duration:

      • Usually valid for the duration of your course plus 1-2 months.

      • Can include multiple courses under a package (e.g., English + Diploma + Degree).


Work Rights:

      • Allowed to work 48 hours per fortnight during study periods.

      • Unlimited work hours during official course breaks.

      • AUD 1600 (as of 2025)

      • Varies by sector (typically 1–3 months).

      • Quicker for streamlined countries and courses.

Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590)

The Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) allows parents, legal guardians, or relatives to stay in Australia while supporting international students under 18 who are pursuing their studies. This visa ensures the student receives necessary care and welfare. 


Who can apply?

      • Parents: If you are the parent of the student. 

      • Legal Guardians: If you have legal custody of the student. 

      • Relatives: If you are a relative of the student (aged 21 or older) and nominated by a parent or             legal guardian.


Who cannot apply?

      • Spouses of students: This visa is not for spouses of students. 

      • Students over 18: The visa is primarily for supporting students under 18. 


Requirements:

      • Age: You must be 21 years or older. 

      • Relationship to student: You must be a parent, legal guardian, or nominated relative. 

      • Accommodation, welfare, and support: You must be able to provide these to the student. 

      • Financial evidence: You need to demonstrate that you can support yourself and the student. 

      • Health insurance: You must have adequate health insurance. 

      • Genuine temporary entrant: You must demonstrate that you intend to leave Australia at the end   of your visa. 

Key features:

Duration of stay: The visa is generally valid for the same duration as the student's visa. 


Study rights: You can study for up to 20 hours a week in another course or an English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS). 


Work rights: You cannot work while in Australia on this visa.
